New Zealand native plant, flower and fungi earrings
All earrings are hand drawn and covered in resin to protect the artwork.
The dimensions shown beneath each earring shows the size of the artwork (does not include the hooks and findings etc). The length of the hooks is approximately 20mm on top of the size of the artwork. The hooks are made from hypoallergenic stainless steel. Please allow two weeks for your orders to be filled and sent.

Pōhutukawa
Dimensions: approx 20mm high x 25mm wide
Commonly known as the NZ Christmas tree due to it’s flowers making the entire tree appear red during the summer. It is a coastal tree that sprouts aerial roots that can spread to find any crack or crevice where it can get nutrition or water.

NZ clematis / puawānanga
Dimensions: approx 35mm high x 30mm wide
There are 7 clematis species native to NZ. Traditionally the flowering of clematis indicated that spring had started.

Poroporo flowers

Poroporo berries are poisonous when green but safe to eat when ripe. They were often planted intentionally around villages to be eaten as fruit.

Kākā beak / kōwhai ngutu-kākā

Kākā beak / kōwhai ngutu-kākā
There are only two species, which are only found in NZ and both are seriously threated with extinction in the wild. Māori used kākā beak to feed caged tūī in order to use these captive birds as a lure to entice and trap others wild birds for food.

Traditionally the oil extracted from Pittosporum tenuifolium was used as a perfume, due to its pleasant fragrance and medicinal properties.

Manuka flower studs

Bees make 22,700 individual trips to manuka flowers to collect enough nectar for one 500g jar of manuka honey. A single bee may only collect enough nectar to make 1.4g of honey in their lifespan, but a hive can have 20,000-80,000 worker bees.

Kōwhai flower

Kōwhai are sometimes referred to as our national flower and the 9 species provide an abundance of food to our native nectar feeders. The flowers were traditionally used to create a yellow dye, hence the Māori name for yellow is kōwhai.

Chatham Island forget-me-not flower / Kopakopa
Dimensions: approx 15mm high x 15mm wide
Is a giant mega herb, that can reach over 1m tall. It is threatened in the wild, but can be found in private flower gardens across NZ.

Werewere kōkako fungus
Dimensions: approx 30mm high x 15mm wide
According to the stories from the Tūhoe iwi, the North Island kōkako gets its blue wattle by rubbing its cheek against the mushroom. Hence the name, werewere-kōkako.

Ngaio flowers
Dimensions: approx 15mm high x 15mm wide
Ngaio’s leaves are dotted with oil glands that are full of a strong toxin. This toxin makes their leaves and berries highly poisonous. However, the oil can be extracted and used for medicinal purposes.
